Omega-3: What you need to know about DHA and EPA in your supplements

So, what do you need to know about the supplements DHA and EPA?  A lot.  I'll try to break it down for you:

EPA fits into more of the brain-helping molecules and has greater anti-inflammatory properties in your body.  It's generally recommended you look for a supplement with more EPA than DHA, because your body will use more EPA than DHA.  It's been shown to help increase attention for those with ADHD and decrease frequency and symptoms for those with depression.

DHA helps make better membranes on neurons.  Better membranes make cells work more efficiently. That means the cells in your retina can transmit images and your brain cells can send messages more quickly.  In other words, you think and move more quickly!  It also helps decrease the likelihood of arterial plaques.  That means it lowers the risk for heart attack and stroke!

EPA and DHA also have the effect of lowering triglycerides.  If you are at risk or have diabetes, you know how much you want to keep those numbers in check to maintain healthy blood vessels!

Omega-3's are great, right? Yes they are! But remember that anything that can help, can also hurt if used in the wrong circumstances or the wrong doses. More is not always better. Did you know that Omega-3's are also blood thinners? So if used while you're using other prescription blood thinners, over-the-counter meds like Ibuprofen that are anti-coagulants (blood thinners), or other supplements that also have blood thinning properties, Omega-3's can cause a problem!

It's always wise to check with your primary care doctor, cardiologist, neurologist, and other specialty care professionals before beginning a new supplement.

For all those who love to read about molecules (Yes, I'm guilty!), following is a great link to an article with even more references at the end for more information about research on the benefits of EPA and DHA.  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/in-the-zone/201204/what-are-the-real-differences-between-epa-and-dha
