Following Concussion, Athletes Removed From Playing Sports May Have Shorter Recovery Time, Higher Neurocognitive Scores Than Those Who Are Not Removed, Research Indicates

According to recently published research in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, athletes who remained in play after a concussion experienced longer recovery duration and worse cognitive symptoms before being cleared to return to play.  The study followed athletes aged 11-18 after being diagnosed with a concussion during athletic competition.  Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) measured neurocognitive function and the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) was used to measure symptom severity.

This study highlights the importance of immediate removal from play for concussed athletes.
