According to recently published research in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, athletes who remained in play after a concussion experienced longer recovery duration and worse cognitive symptoms before being cleared to return to play. The study followed athletes aged 11-18 after being diagnosed with a concussion during athletic competition. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) measured neurocognitive function and the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) was used to measure symptom severity.
This study highlights the importance of immediate removal from play for concussed athletes.
